Mary Ethel Meraw

     Mary Ethel was born on Monday, 2 November 1885 in Hungerford Township, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. She was christened there in St. Edmund Church. The records for 1884-1885 were lost in a fire. Ethel was raised in Tweed, Ontario. She followed her sisters, Addy & Anna to reside in the United States in 1906. She lived at the home of her sister Anna & George Lemire at 27 Labrosse, Detroit, Michigan along with her sister Addy. She was a tailor. Her sister Addy was a seamstress. 25 April 1910, the U.S. Federal Census listed Ethel living in the home of her sister at Detroit. Enumerated in this household were George J. Lemire [29 Canada immigrated 1900], his wife: Anna E. [29 Canada immigrated 1900], They were married 4 years. sisters-in-law: Addie B. Meraw [35 Canada immigrated 1892 dressmaker], & Ethel M. Meraw [24 Canada immigrated 1906 tailoress].¹ Ethel married Victor Montieth Pollock, son of George Pollock and Charlotte Colton, on 2 July 1910 in Detroit. After their marriage, they Established themselves in Birmingham, Oakland County, Michigan.² 6 February 1920, Ethel and her husband, Victor, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Birmingham, Bloomfield Township at 142 South Woodward Avenue. Enumerated in this household were Victor M. Pollock [38 Canada], his wife, Ethel M. [31 Canada], children: Robert V. [5 Michigan], Phillip M. [6 mos. Michigan], and William L. Farmer [64 Ohio].³ 22 April 1930, Ethel and her husband, Victor, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Birmingham, Bloomfield Township at 386 East Maple Street. Enumerated in this household were Victor M. Pollock [48 Canada, Scotland & England], his wife: Ethel M. [40 Canada, Canada & Canada], children: Robert V. [15 Michigan], Philip M. [10 Michigan]. They were renting a place for $55. Victor became a citizen in 1884 & Ethel became citizen in 1908.⁴ Ethel's husband, Victor, died on 28 August 1944 in Birmingham, Bloomfield Township at the family home at 619 Vinewood leaving her a widow. 21 April 1950, Mary was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Birmingham, Oakland County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Ethel M. Pollock [59 Canada widowed].⁵ Mary died on Saturday, 21 February 1959 in Royal Oak, Oakland County, Michigan, at Beaumont Hospital at age 73 years, 3 months and 19 days from a brain tumor. She was buried there in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfiekl on Tuesday, 24 February 1959. She was buried in section 15, lot 65, grave 12.
