Elizabeth Jane McCurdy

     Elizabeth Jane was born on Saturday, 18 January 1806 in Path Valley, Metal Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of James McCurdy I and Elizabeth Taylor. Jane married John Litel Sweney on 16 January 1834 in Liberty Township, Crawford County, Ohio.^2,3 John and Jane had children: James Addison [3/18/1834-4/12/1918], Sarah Elizabeth [9/01/1835-9/051859], Martha Jane [5/24/1837-2/03/1861], John Wilson [9/__/1839-][m. Sarah Jane], Isaac Newton [8/21/1841-11/14/1872], Nancy Louise [10/18/1843-10/31/1863], Thomas Leander [3/04/1847-4/04/1910][m. 11/08/1878 Mary Elizabeth Bell] & William Sidney [6/28/1850-1/07/1930][m. Margaret Ellen Hess]. 3 September 1850, Jane and her husband, John, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Whetstone Township. Enumerated in this household were John Sweney [50 Pennsylvania], his wife: Jane [44 Pennsylvania], children: James [16 Ohio], Sarah E. [14 Ohio], Martha J. [12 Ohio], John [11 Ohio], Isaac [9 Ohio], Nancy L. [7 Ohio], Thomas L. [4 Ohio], & William S. [5 mo. Ohio].⁴ 28 June 1860, Jane and her husband John were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Whetstone Township. Enumerated in this household were John Sweney [62 Pennsylvania], his wifea; Jane [54 Pennsylvania], children: James [26 Ohio], Martha J. [22 Ohio], John [20 Ohio], Isaac [18 Ohio], Nancy L. [16 Ohio], Thomas L. [14 Ohio], & William S. [10 Ohio].⁵ Elizabeth's husband, an unknown person , died on 10 September 1881 in Whetstone Township, Crawford County, Ohio, leaving her a widow. Elizabeth departed this life on Tuesday, 19 June 1883 in Whetstone Township at age 77 years, 5 months and 1 day. She was buried there in Stewart Cemetery. She was buried in grave no. 186 A. The inscription on her stone reads: Jane wife of J. L. Sweney - Died June 19, 1883 - Aged 77 Y. 5 M. 1 D.
