Elizabeth was born in 1784 in Nantucket, Nantucket County, Massachusetts. Elizabeth married Joseph Leggett , son of Thomas Leggett Jr. and Mary Haight, on 3 September 1808 in Nantucket. In a Quaker ceremony. Joseph & Elizabeth had children: Sarah "Sally" Ann [ca. 1808-5/24/1883][m. after 1850 Gustavus A. Benson][no issue]], James Shaw [9/14/1809-4/03/1892], Caroline [4/15/1811-1/04/1833][unmarried], William Jenkins [7/17/1813-8/19/1818], Mary Haight [7/17/1813-7/21/1849][m. 4/09/1840 Lewis W. Sturtevant [12/10/1811- ]], & Edward William [6/19/1818-2/03/1828]. James had children: Joseph, Isabell, George P. [m. Dorothy Winifred Hamlet], and Elizabeth. Mary & Lewis had children: Thomas L., Edward Lewis, & Joseph N.1 12 October 1850, Elizabeth and her husband, Joseph, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Philadelphia. Enumerated in this household were Joseph Leggett [65 New York - gentleman], his wife: Elizabeth [65 Massachusetts], Sarah Ann [42 New York], Thomas L. Sturtevant [9 New York], Edward L. [8 Massachusetts], Joseph N. [6 Massachusetts], Alice Moss [21 Ireland], Ann McGlivery [22 Ireland], & James Green [19 Philadelphia].2 Elizabeth's husband, Joseph, died on 25 October 1852 in Philadelphia leaving her a widow. 1860, the U.S. Federal Census listed Elizabeth living in the home of her daughter at Winthrop, Kennebec County, Maine. Enumerated in this household were Gustuvus A Benson [58 Maine], Sarah A. [53 New York], Thomas Sturdevant [19 New York], Edward L. Sturdevant [18 Massachusetts],Joseph Studevant [15 Massachusetts] & Elizabeth Leggett [76 Massachusetts].3 Elizabeth departed this life on Tuesday, 1 May 1866 in Winthrop at age 82 years. She was buried at Philadelphia in Laural Hill Cemetery.4
