Francis Yates1,2,3,4
M, b. circa 1648, d. before 8 December 1682
Francis was born circa 1648 in Connecticut. The Francis who was first at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut was probably the father of this Francis. The family removed from there in 1641 to Stanford and then in 1647, they removed to Hemstead, Long Island. It seems that the son, Francis, removed to the town of Westchester, Westchester County, New York.4,5 Francis married Dorothy Marsh, daughter of Jonathan Marsh and Mary (?), on 22 July 1669 in New York City, New York County, New York.6,2 Francis made his will on 29 November 1682 at Westchester, Westchester County, New York.
The Last Will and Testament Francis Yates of Westchester weake in Body butt perfect in minde memory and understanding I Declare in Life how my children and Estate shall be Disposed of after my Decease - I surrender my spirit to God who gave it." "I will and bequeath to Mr. Wm. Richardson my five children, viz. Mary, John, Dinah, Jonathan and Dorothy, for him to keep so many of them as he sees fit. The rest to be put out to whom he thinks fit, but not to any of my own kindred, or kindred of my wife." I surrender my spirit to God who gave it." "I will and bequeath to Mr. Wm. Richardson my five children, viz. Mary, John, Dinah, Jonathan and Dorothy, for him to keep so many of them as he sees fit. The rest to be put out to whom he thinks fit, but not to any of my own kindred, or kindred of my wife." I doe Constitute and Impower Mr. Richardson forsaid to be my Sole Executor to Receive all Dues and pay all debts and what shall remain of my Estate to be Disposed of for the use of my children as he shall think fit And that this my Last Will and Testament I Witness under my Hand this 29 November 1682. - Witnesses, Edward Walters, John Jennings.7,8
Francis departed this life in Westchester. His inventory included his house & home lot with orchard valued at £40. Total amount, £83. His will was probated on 18 December 1682. On this date, Edward Waters aged 59 presented the will and inventory to the court. John Jennings also destified to the validity of the will.
Important Notes:
According to Francis' will of 1682, it appears that he has family in this country that he does not want to raise his children. We have the name "Francis Yates" listed among immigrants who settled in Connecticut and then removed to New York. It seems that this Francis is more likely the father of the Francis who died in 1682. If this is true, then the Francis dying in 1682 would have been born probably in the 1640's probably in Connecticut. More research needs to be done on this family.
