Joseph was born circa 1647 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He was the son of Henry Rowland and Rebecca (?) Joseph married Sarah Wilson circa 1671. Joseph &Sarah had children: Elizabeth, Joseph [__-7/--/1728]][m. Abigail Whitlock], Samuel [ca. 1679-11/04/1748][m. 1st Esther & m. 2nd Sarah Sherman], James [__-1750] & Henry [ca. 1691-6/29/1775][m. 1st 9/25/1718 Tamar Sherman, m. 2nd Abigail Andres & m. 3rd Mary]. He was still living 21 December 1716 when he deeded land to Samuel Lyon that he had received from his wife Sarah, only daughter Anthony Wilson.

His “now wife Sarah” was mentioned 26 Dec 1681; on 25 Mar. 1686/87, the exec. of the estate of Anthony Wilson deceased made agreement with Joseph Rowland who m. the dau. and only heir.
On 15 Feb 1705 [1705/06], Joseph Rowland Sr., conveyed for love to son Joseph. On 21 Sept 1709, Thomas Clark gave receipt to Joseph Rowland, Jr. for payment of a mortgage from my father Joseph Rowland; witnessed by Philip Lewis and Elizabeth Lewis the younger. Joseph conveyed, 21 Dec 1716, to Samuel Lyon of Fairfield, land I had by my wife Sarah, only daughter of Anthony Wilson, having already given to sons Joseph, Samuel, and James Rowland.
