One hundred acres of this land was obtained in 1835 from the U.S. Government.
He was born 24 October 1825 in Sussex County, New Jersey, son of Aaron & Sarah [Fairchild] Beardslee. His grandfather Beverly, great Col. Beardslee, who was officer in Revolutionary War - was born in Sussex County where the old stone home still in which they lived still stands. Family came originally from England. Aaron was one of a large family of children. He married Sarah Fairchild & had four children: Orsamus, John [deceased], Barton b. NJ, Phebe Ann Lanning [deceased] b. MI. In 1832, Aaron, accompanied by his wife & three children, started to find a new home in the forests of Michigan. The journey was long & tiresome & in our day of rapid transit would seem apauling, but the completion of the Erie Canal had made traveling comparatively easy when that waterway was reached. Our travelers went first to Albany, thence by canal to Buffalo, and by steamboat to Detroit & remainder by team. They joined a cousin, John W. Beardslee, who since 1825, had been loacated at Sashabaw Plains, & had taken up the first land at Independence Township. They shared his home the first summer & in the fall built a cabin in section 27 on land belonging to Leander Taylor. Aaron built a cabin on U.S. land which two years later was entered by his brother. There Mr. Beardslee died in 1837 when but 35 years of age. Orsamus was 6 1/2 years old when family came to Michigan & his home has been in section 13 since the fall of 1833. When his father died he was only 12 years old & eldest of the family. Responsibilities fell upon him that prevented much school attendence. At first he worked by the month for neighboring farmers, soon he became able to acquire land which, added to the original tract, which has resulted in his present land holdings. Mr. Beardslee, has always engaged in general farming & his fertile land produces large crops annually, something like 2000 bushels of wheat, 1000 bushels of barley, 400 bushels of buckwheat, 300 bushels of potatoes. He had a large stock of cattle. He was first married to Jane Hibler of New Jersey. Both she & son John are deceased. His second marriage was to Clarissa Beardsley, a distant relative & five children have been born to that union - Estella [d. 1886] m. Isaac I.
