Francis was born on Tuesday, 30 May 1837 at Liberty Township, Crawford County, Ohio. He was the son of William M. McCurdy I and Zilpha Matthews. Francis also went by the name of Frank. Francis married Marietta Ramsey on 27 December 1866 at Peoria County, Illinois. They were married at the family home of the bride. Frank removed from Ohio to Illinois in 1859 & located in Peoria County. In 1861, he enlisted in the the US Army & was assigned to Company G, Eighth Missouri Regiment because Illinois quota was full. He served four years & was honorably discharged at the close of the Civil War. He spent a short time in Libby Prison & was with Sherman in his march to the sea.
After returning to Illinois, he & Mariette were married. In December of 1870, they moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa. In 1872, they moved to their home on 5th Avenue where they spent the remainder of their lives. Frank worked in railway construction until 1904.
Frank & Marietta were spending the winter with their daughter Laura in San Antoniio, Texas as they had done on one other occasion. He was suddenly strickened & died. Marietta then resided with her sister Laura In Belle Plaine. Frank also went by the name Franklin. 7 June 1870, Francis was listed on the U.S. Federal Census at Henderson County, Illinois. Enumerated in this household were Franklin McCurdy [33 Ohio], Marietta [33 Virginia], Laurietta [1 Illinois], Elijah Mondell [18 Indiana]. He was an old iron peddler.1 1880, Francis and his wife, Marietta, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census at Belle Plaine, Iowa Township, Benton County, Iowa. Enumerated in this household were Frank McCurdy [43 Ohio], Marietta [42 Ohio], Laura [11 Illinois], Edith [2 Iowa].2 6 June 1900, Francis and his wife, Marietta, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census at Belle Plaine, Iowa Township, Benton County, Iowa. Enumerated in this household were F. E. McCurdy [May 1837 - 63 - Ohio], Marietta [February 1838 - 62 - Ohio], Florence Miller [grandchild] [March 1889 - 11 Iowa], Chester Miller [grandchild] [August 1886 - 13 Iowa]. Francis and Marietta had been married for 33 years; two children had been born, one living.3 Francis made his will January 1903 at Belle Plaine, Iowa Township, Benton County, Iowa. Francis departed this life on Saturday, 24 April 1909 at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas., at age 71 years, 10 months and 25 days. Obituary: Belle Plaine Union - 7 May 1909] Francis was laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Belle Plaine, Iowa Township, Benton County, Iowa, in section 38, lot E 5 1/2.
