Roxana Smith

     Roxana was born on Sunday, 11 June 1815 at Tioga, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Ichabod Smith [19 July 1782 Springfield, Mass.-] & Anna May Harkness 22 May 1790 Stamford, Vermont-7 Dec 1837 Elmwood, Illinois] who married 17 April 1809. Maternal grandparents were James Harkness & Elizabeth Edson. Roxana married James McCurdy II, son of James McCurdy I and Elizabeth Taylor, on 8 March 1838 at Elmwood, Peoria County, Illinois. Roxana departed this life on Thursday, 11 April 1850 at Elmwood, Peoria County, Illinois, at age 34 years and 10 months. Roxana was laid to rest in the Harkness Grove Cemetery, Elmwood, Peoria County, Illinois, in section 3. 11 November 1850, Roxana and her husband James were listed on the U.S. Federal Census at Peoria Township, Peoria County, Illinois. Enumerated in this household were James McCurdy [33 Pennsylvania], Anna [11 Illinois], Sidney [8 Illinois], Martha J. [6 Illinois], John [5 Illinois], Nancy [2 Illinois], Martha J. Smith [21 Ohio], John Aldridge [19 Illinois]. James' sister Nancy was listed very close to him on the census.¹
