     Jordan Lawrence Mott IV was born on Monday, 15 August 1881 at Manhattan, New York City, New York. He often went by his middle name, Lawrence. Jordan married Caroline Whitmarsh Pitkin on 29 April 1901 in Boston.1 He was a graduate of Harvard. In 1912, Jordan, listed as a purser and Mrs. Frances Hewitt Bowne, an opera singer disguised as a cabin boy, sailed to China. Later both were divorced by their spouses. He was an artist and an author of several books.2 3 January 1920, Jordan was was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Avalon, Catalina Township, Los Angeles County, California. Enumerated in this household were Jordan L. Mott III [37 New York][married], lodgers: Mrs. Francis Hewitt [40 Oregon][Divorced] & Mrs. Emily Vaughan [69 England][Widow]. Jordan is an author; Francis is a musician working as a teacher. He is renting.3 Jordan married 2nd Frances Cecelia Hewitt in 1928 in California. 9 April 1930, Jordan and his wife, Frances, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Los Angeles, Los Angelos County, California. Enumerated in this household were Lawrence Mott [48 New York], Francis H. [50 Oregon], adopted son: Sterling A. Young [19 Oregon] & mother-in-law: Emily A. Vaughan.4 Jordan departed this life on Wednesday, 3 June 1931 in Douglas County, Oregon, near Steamboat Creek at age 49 years, 9 months and 19 days. He died of leukemia. He was buried in Brooklyn, Kings Counfy, New York, in Green Wood Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: Jordan Lawrence Mott - August 15th 1881 - June 3rd 1931.5
