Walter was born circa 1096. He was the son of Alan fitz Flaald Senescal of Dol. Walter was the third son of the fourth Senescal of Dol. He entered the service of David I, King of Scotland and was later appointed his steward. Malcolm IV confirmed this appointment, "Steward of Scotland" to the Stewart family in 1157.
