John Litel Sweney

     John was born on Friday, 7 December 1798 at Gettysburg, Cumberland Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John & Sarah [Litel] Sweney. John Sweney was born September 1742 and died 23 June 1826 in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. Sarah was born 12 July 1768 and died 14 October 1828 in Crawford County, Ohio. They married 26 March 1793 in York County, Pennsylvania. John was the son of Miles Sweney [circa 1720-1798 and Eleanor Campbell who were married 20 May 1741. Eleanor was the daughter of Thomas Campbell].¹ John married Elizabeth Jane McCurdy, daughter of James McCurdy I and Elizabeth Taylor, on 16 January 1834 at Liberty Township, Crawford County, Ohio.^2,3,4 The 1840 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Whetstone Township, Crawford County, Ohio, the family of J. [19 Ohio], Matilda Read [30 Pennsylvania][domestic servant], Alice Read [12 Ohio][domestic servant]. He is a farmer. His estate was valued at real estate $2,400 and personal at $1,833. He is a farmer.⁸ John departed this life on Saturday, 10 September 1881 at Whetstone Township, Crawford County, Ohio, at age 82 years, 9 months and 3 days. John was laid to rest in the Stewart Cemetery, Whetstone Township, Crawford County, Ohio, in grave number 186.
