     John was born on Tuesday, 8 April 1845 at City, County & State of New York. John married Anna Yates in 1868 in Shanghai. 2 July 1870, John was was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York. Enumerated in this household were John Ferris [25 New York], Annie [21 Massachusettw] & Charles [4/12 New York]. He is a cooper.1 When a boy, he was a stowaway on a ship to China. He then became a runner boy for an American Tea House & later became a partner & a wealthy man. He built a beautiful house in Shanghai. In later life, he bought a farm near Poughkeepsie and built a beautiful home there.2 June 1880, John and his wife, Anna, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York, at South Clover Street. Enumerated in this household were John Seaman [34 New York], Annie [29 Massachusetts], Charles [10 New York], William [4 New York]. He is a cooper.3 4 June 1900, John and his wife, Anna, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Peekskill at North Bridge Street. Enumerated in this household were John Seaman [55 New York - September 1846], his wife: Annie L. [51 New York - July 1849] & son: William [24 New York - September 1875]. They had been married 32 years with 4 children, two living. John is a broker & William is an electrician.4 2 May 1910, Johnand his wife, Anna, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York, on North Road. Enumerated in this household were John F Seaman [66 New York], Annie Y [61 China] & a daughter, Josephine Gaskin [38 England]. The couple had been married 39 years; he was a merchant working for a commission.5 John departed this life on Thursday, 26 August 1915 in Hancock County, Maine, at his summer home in Bar Harbor at age 70 years, 4 months and 18 days.

John Ferris Seaman, one of the Commissioners who drew up the present commercial treaty between China and the United States, died on Friday at his Summer home near Bar Harbor, Me., at the age of 70 years. Mr. Seaman was a grandson of Dr. Valentine Seaman, who is said to have introduced vaccination in New York in 1779, [note: this date should have been 1799, KLM] and eighth in descent from Robert Livingston. His home , near Poughkeepsie, was on a part of the old Livingston Grant.
Mr. Seaman went to Hongkong, China when 16 years old, for the firm of Oliphant & Co. Later he became the senior partner in the house of Wisner & Co., of Shanghai. He was a founder and ex-president of the Asiatic Society of China, and one of the founders of St. John's College, Shanghai. He was largely instrumental in the formation of the International Court at Shanghai. Mr. Seaman is survived by his widow, who was the daughter of the Rev. Mathew T. Yates, and a brother, Dr. Louis Livingston.6,7

He was buried in Manhattan, New York City, New York, in Woodlawn Cemetery.8
