James Whittemore
     James was born on Wednesday, 31 October 1860 at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. He was the son of Joseph P. Whittemore & Margaret Cleopatria Fay. James married Blanche Irving Leggett, daughter of Augustus Wright Leggett and Eliza Seaman, on 14 June 1882 in Detroit at 169 Elizabeth Street. They were married at the home of Blanche's parents.1 James was a patent attorney. 5 June 1900, James and his wife, Blanche, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Detroit at 67 Garfield Avenue. Enumerated in this household were James Whittemore [39 Michigan - October 1860], Blanche [40 Michigan - May 1860], Emma [17 Michigan - May 1883], Margaret [16 Illinois - May 1884], Nelson [13 Illinois - April 1887]. James & Blanche were married 18 years and had 3 children, 3 living. James was a lawyer.2 22 April 1910, James and his wife, Blanche, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Detroit at 67 Garfield Avenue. Enumerated in this household were James Whittemore [49 Michigan], Blanche [49 Michigan], Nelson W. [23 Michigan], servants: Kiman Kaltin [25 Ireland/English], Lottie Warenttit [25 Canada]. They have been married 27 years with three children, all living. James was a patent attorney, and Nelson was a clerk.3 James married Emmala Keel before the 1930 census. She had been previously married to Francis F. Capers. 10 April 1930, James was was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Santa Barbara at 612 Evalerio Street. Enumerated in this household were James Whittemore [69 Michigan], Emmala K. [65 South Carolina], Margaret F. [41 Illinois] & a servant: Matilda Meyer [ 39 Wisconsin]. They owned their home valued at $20,000, and they had a radio. He was 21 years old when first married, she was 20 years old.4 15 April 1940, James was was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Santa Barbara at 612 Evalerio Street. Enumerated in this household were James Whittemore [79 Michigan], Emmala K. [75 South Carolina] & a servant: Anna A. Hamersek [44 Checho-Slovakia] . They owned their home valuedat $8,000. They lived at the same place in 1935. He had finished 4 years of high school and she had finished 4 years of college. James was retired.5 James departed this life on Friday, 1 August 1941 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, California.6 He was buried at Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara Cemetery.7
