Anne Merrill

F, b. circa 1514, d. circa 16 June 1560
     Anne was born circa 1514 in England. Anne married John Spencer circa 1534 in Edworth, Bedfordshire, England. Anne's husband, John, died circa 9 June 1558 in Edworth, leaving her a widow. Anne made her will on 13 June 1560.

She names her son, Gerard, age 17, son, Michael, to have the chest that was his brother Johns; John Spencer, son Michael's child, to have 20 pounds; Elizabeth Lymer, to have four pounds at her marriage; Alice Aystin, to have a calf; servants; for the mending of "London Brygge waye", 10s; brother Edward's children, to have the one pound he borrowe[d of her; and the barley he gave her sons to his children; Nicolas Merryll & John Meryll, his brother, to have the barley their father gave her sons; and the poor of Edworth, to have the gift already mentioned.1

Anne departed this life in Edworth. She was buried there in the churchyard of St. George's on Thursday, 16 June 1560. The recorder in entering her burial, paid her respect by the following tribute: "The good hospitallity keeper; and she hid that she give to the township of Edworth ii of her best bease to be lett to ii poore folks in the towne for iii s. a cow and the parson & church warden to have the letting of them & the distributing of the money to the poore & to se the stock maintained each of them to have iiii d. of the vi s. for ther paynes to se this truely done according to her last will." Her will was probated on 21 April 1561.
