     Erastus was born on Tuesday, 29 September 1767 in Howells Depot, Orange County, New York. Erastus married Phebe Vail, daughter of William Vail and Phebe Vail, on 6 March 1788 in Orange County, New York. The family resided at Mount Hope. Erastus departed this life on Thursday, 3 September 1857 in Mount Hope Town, Orange County, New York. Erastus was buried in the Mapes Burying Ground, Howells, Orange County, New York.

He owned a large tract of land in the Town of Mount Hope, Orange County, N. Y. which he divided equally among his sons , retaining the home place for himself and the youngest son through whom it has come down to the latter's granddaughter who now occupies the house built by Erastus Mapes. On Mar. 6, 1788 he married Phoebe Vail, daughter of William Vail and Phoebe Vail. She was born Sept. 5, 1765 and died Aug. 25, 1844. They were buried in the Mapes Family Burying Ground at Howells, N . Y. Their children were: Sarah Mapes b. July 11, 1788 d. Jan. 22, 1839 unmarried, Seth Mapes b. July 7, 1790, Asa Mapes b.
