     Amaury was born circa 1156 in Great Rollright, Oxfordshire, England. He was also known by the name Almaric. Amaury married Amabel de Chesney circa 1179.2,3 He served as le Despenser to Richard I [1189-1199] giving him the title of Steward of the King. He also served as le Despenser for King John [1199-1217].4 Amaury's wife, Amabel, died before 1195, leaving him a widower. Amaury married 2nd Alda Bluet, daughter of Ralph Bluet II, circa 1195.5 After the death of his brother, Walter, in 1204, Amaury inherited the manor of King's Stanley in Glouchester.2 Amaury departed this life on Monday, 14 February 1205 in Great Rollright, Oxfordshire, England.6 He was buried at Oxfordshire, England, in the Godstow Abbey.7 In 1205, custody of Amaury's land & heir, Thurstan, was committed to Peter de Stokes. Peter was his son-in-law & died in 1207. In 1210, he was under the guardianship of Rowland Bluet.2,8

In 1214 Roger Cordwaner had seisin of the land late of Amaury le Despenser in "Roberichton" [? Rollright], Oxon In 1215, after the death of Thomas Bluet, the land late of Amaury in Stanley was committed to Reuland bluet, and in the following year Reuland's land and what he had in his custody of the said Amaury's land was committed to Osbert Gifford.
