Violet Hinebaugh

     Violet was born circa 1811 in Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Conrad Hinebaugh & Mary Trout of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Violet married Samuel Peterman, son of Johannes Peterman and Maria Barbara Eckert, on 19 November 1833 in Crawford County, Ohio.1 Samuel attended school until sixteen and assisted his father on the farm. He moved to Ohio in October 1827 with his parents. After 5 years, Samuel left his father's farm and for 25 years engaged in hauling goods to Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Columbus & Sandusky. With the introduction of the railroad, he ran a livery stable at the southeast corner of Walnut & Mary. Sometime later he resided in Holmes Twp. where he farmed for some twenty-five years before removing to Fort Recovery. Samuel and Violet had one daughter: Mary Ann [12/27/1834-11/15/1838] & raised from birth, Caroline [9/271844-7/25/1916][m. 1/03/1865 Jacob Bash] daughter of Joseph Winterhalter, since her mother having probalby died in childbirth. 17 September 1850, Violet and her husband, Samuel, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Bucyrus Township, Crawford County, Ohio. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Peterman [39 Pennsylvania laborer $800], his wife, Violet [39 Pennsylvania], & Caroline [6 Ohio].2 1 June 1860, Violet and her husband Samuel were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Holmes Township, Crawford County, Ohio. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Peterman [49 Pennsylvania], his wife, Violet [49 Pennsylvania], and Caroline Winterhalter [16 Ohio].3 23 July 1870, Violet and her husband, Samuel, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Holmes Township. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Peterman [59 Pennsylvania], Violet [59 Pennsylvania] & Wilson Watson [10 Ohio]. Samuel is a farmer; the couple has a farm valued at $4800 and personal property at $400.4 7 June 1880, Violet and her husband, Samuel, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Holmes Township. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Peterman [69 Pensylvania] & Violet [69 Pennsylvania]. They are farming.5 There is a stone standing here in Mount Zion Cemetery, Noble Township, Jay County, Indinana next to her husband's with only her name inscribed on the stone. Caroline, who was raised by the Petermans, is also buried in this cemetery.
