     William was born in Hesdin, Flanders, France. He is on record as consenting to a gift by his father Ernulf, along with his sister, Avelina. He is also on record in 1125 as a witness to a gift given by Henry I to Cluny Abbey in France. It is thought that he had inherited land holdings from his father in France and had taken up residence there. There has not been anyother records located regarding William.1
