M, b. circa 1590, d. before 7 January 1671/72
John was born circa 1590 in Carleton Rode, County Norfolk, England. John married Nazareth Yelverton, daughter of Edward Yelverton and Lady Nazareth Bedingfeld, in 1614 in County Norfolk, England. The Crowell's of Cape Cod, Massachusetts descend from John & Yelverton Crowe. It is an ancient English family, the name was originally spelled Crow & Crowe. The spelling of the Cape Cod family was changed about 1700. John's wife, Nazareth, died circa 21 May 1626 in New Buckenham, County Norfolk, England, leaving him a widow. John married 2nd Elishua (?) circa 1633 in England. On 8 May 1635, John left Weymouth aboard the ship, "Hopewell", bound for New England. Listed among the passengers was John Crowe of Eilpeck and family.6 He sold his dwelling house and land to Matthew Averie on the 16th day of the fourth month 1638 in Charlestown and soon moved to Yarmouth. John was then given the title of freeman on 2 June 1640 there in Yarmouth.7 John departed this life before 7 January 1671/72 in Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Yarmouth Samuel & Thomas & perhaps more children.
  4. [S288] Inez Fowler Johnson, The McCallum Family, pages 58-59 - Mr. John Crow was in Charlestown in 1635 and was admitted as an inhabitant there. He came to Yarmouth, Massachusetts, with Mr. Thacher and Mr. Howes, in 1639, as one of the first Land Committee, and a Deputy to the Colony Court for several terms. In 1640, in connection with Mr. Edmund Freeman of Sandwich, one of the Assistants, and Mr. Thomas Dimmock of Barnstable, he was elected as a member of a court to try cases involving not over twenty shillings, the first local judicial establishment in the County. He was a Puritan of the strictest sect. He died in January, 1673. His house which stood about an eighth of a mile north of the meeting house in Dennis, remained for nearly two centuries. It was constructed of large pieces of timber for sills and plates, with boarding each side filled in with small stones and clay. This formed the walls of the house which was plastered with shell mortar, inside and out. From his sons, John, Samuel, and Thomas and perhaps others, have sprung a numerous and useful progeny. The name was sometimes spelled CROWE and began to be written CROWELL in about the third generation. (p. 47. History of Old Yarmouth, by Charles Swift.)
John Crow's wife, Elishua, had come to Charleston, the year before and bought a house of Mr. William Jennings on her arrival. (Charlestown Records.) He was a Town Officer. Removed to Yarmouth: took oath of allegiance to Plymouth Colony. Recorded December 18, 1638. Magistrate June 2, 1640. Wife Elishua admitted to Church, Charlestown, 1634-5. (From Pope's Pioneers of Massachusetts, p. 124.)
It has sometimes been assumed, without sufficient evidence, that Yelverton Crow was a brother of John, one of the grantees of the town. He was one on a list of those able to bear arms in 1643, was a Grand Juryman in 1656; Deputy in 1663, 1666 and 1667, and a Selectman the same year. He died in 1683. He lived at "South Sea." He had a son Thomas. (P. 70, History of Old Yarmouth.)
"The Yelvertons were a family of great antiquity in the county of Norfolk. They were Earls of Sussex, Viscounts Longueville and Baronets. The present Viscount Avonmore is a Yelverton. It is probable that a member of the family of Crowe married a Yelverton, and this is the origin of the name in Yarmouth" (ibid, p. 11), Certain it is that the name Yelverton persisted for generations among the descendants of John Crowe, William Congdon who married Ann Gifford (a descendant) named one of his sons Yelverton (born January 20, 1754). The Boston Transcript goes so far as to suggest that Elishua, wife of John Crowe, was named Yelverton. (G. E. Congdon)
On a looseleaf of the Yarmouth Records is the following notice of John Crowe's death: "The late Mas Crowell was buried 7th Jan. 72 O.S." (From Gen. of John Crowe.)
"Note: Mr. John Crowe of Nobscussit, after the death of his father, was called Senior to distinguish him from John, son of Yelverton Crowe." Taken from: Crow Family (John Crow (Crowell) and his Descendants.).
