     James was born the 5th day of the 1st month 1731 at Reedy Vleigh, Musketa Cove, Queens County, Long Island, New York. James married Avis Tillinghast circa 1758 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. James was a sea captain. After their marriage, they made their home at Newport, R. I. James departed this life on Thursday, 1 April 1790 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. He was buried at Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, in Trinity Church.

    , page 66 - no. 58 JAMES, cc 5, I, 1731; page 98-99 - no. 57 James Carpenter, son of Joseph,'9 was born at Musketa Cove, L. I., 5, 1, 1731. Like his brothers he was a sea-captain. His wife was Avis Tillinghast, born 1737, probably a great-granddaughter of Rev. Pardon Tillinghast. After their marriage they made their home at Newport, R. I., where he died April I, 1790, and Avis his wife died October 2, 1819, aged 82 years. Children: 16o THOMAS, who was also a mariner and died at sea. He was married and left a daughter at Newport; 60a PARDON. Died in 1778; 161 MARY; 161a MARTHA; 162 JAMES,* born 1767, married July 3, 1803; Phebe, sister of Hon. Henry Bull of Newport, R. I., and had son James, living 1883; 162a FRANCIS W., died June 2, 18 21, aged 46 years. 163 Avis, died February 14, I8oo.
    In the cemetery of Trinity Church, Newport, R. I., there are mural monuments with following inscriptions:
    "Capt. James Carpenter," died April I, 1790, aged 60 years. Avis Carpenter, his wife, died October 2, 1819, aged 82 years. Pardon, their son, died 1778.
    Avis, their daughter, died February 14, 18oo.
    Captain James, their son, died Nov. 11, 1808, aged 41 years. Francis W., their son, died June z, 1821, aged 46 years.
    In 1794 Anne Mott, daughter of James and Mary (Underhill) Mott, on a visit to Newport, writes that she dined at the "Widow Carpenter's," whom she afterwards calls "Aunt Carpenter." She writes of her, "She is a remarkable woman and has two clever daughters, which are all her family. She has a brick house and tells me there are but two or three others in the town. They have a garden well stocked with vegetables," etc. (Vide "Adam and Anne Mott.").
