Robert Brooke

M, b. circa 1495, d. before 21 July 1551
     Robert was born circa 1495. He may have been born in the parish of Chingford, county Essex. This is not far from where he resided after his marriage.1 Robert married Katherine (?) circa 1525.2 He was a merchant tailor in London. They lived in the parish of St. Leonars's on Gracechurch Street. Robert has a sister Daye and a brother sho had a daughter Katheryn Noble.3 The will he wrote was not dated.

Robert Broke Citizen and marchantaillor of the Citie of London ... Katheryn my wyef my sole Executrice ... to my children the thirde ppte of my goodes… Katheryn my wieff to have and enyoie my house wherin I nowe dwell for the terme of her lyfe whiche ys named the sterre and the styroppe ... in Gracious [Gracechurch] strete wthin the p[ar]ishe of Saint Leonardes Estchepe and hath on the north side the house of James Morley Ire[N]monger and on the southe syde the house of John Wolstone Ire[N]monger and on the west the kings highe waye called gracious strete and after her decease ... the same house unto my sonne John Broke ... And yf the said John departe this worlde without yssue Then I will the same house unto my three daughters equally ... to the p[ar]sone of seynt Leonardes is to distribute at his pleasure… my syster Daye xxs …Katheryn Noble my brothers doughter visviiid srvaunte Thomas Hoode xxxs and a black gowne …     xxs unto the poor people in the p[ar]yshe of Chinckford in Essex ... xxs unto the poore people of Seynt leonard Estchepe ... And as for all other things I put Robert Brookeholy to the Judgement & good discrecion of ye abovesaid Katheryn my wyef ... witnesses Sir John Turnor p[ar]son, Anthony Cooly grocer, Thomas Hoode Marchaunttaillor. moneye & debtes, after my debtes paide and my funerall charges borne and this my testament and laste will p[er]formed I fully holy geve and bequeathe to the said John Broke my sonne and to the said John Wilson my sonne in lawe equally and indifferently betwene theym to be devided and I make & ordeyne the said John Brooke & John Wilson Executors of this my saide laste will and testamente ... to John Broke my sonne all that my messuage or tenemente with Shoppes cellers sollers warehowses yards lightes easementes comodities hereditamentes and appurtnances whatsoevr thereto belonginge comonly called the signed of the starre and the sturoppe sette and beinge in gracious streate in the said p[ar]ishe of Saynte leonard nighe Eastechepe of london nowe beinge in thoccupacon of the saide John Brooke or his assignes and all and singular my messuages landes [etc], lyinge and beinge in the p[ar]ishe of Horsham in the Com of Sussex nowe beinge in the occupacon of Richarde hollande or his assignes ... and for lacke of suche issue of the body of [John] Brooke my sonne lawfully begotten and to be gotten I will that my saide messuages landes tentes, etc. shall fully and holy remayne to the said Isabell my doughter and to her heires and assignes for ever to be holden of the chefe lorde or lordes of the fee or fees thereof by the rentes and services thereof due and of rights accustomed ... witness Thomas Atkinson Nolus pubcus, Thomas Mortyme, John Smithe.4


Robert departed this life before 21 July 1551 in London, County Middlesex, England, at their home called "Sterre & the Styroppe" on Gracious Street within the parish of St. Leonard's. His will was probated on 21 July 1551.
