Immigrated from Switzerland to Pennsylvania in 1727, pages 33-34 - Margaret Beery, born in Rockingham Co., Va., June 15, 1795, and died in 1852; married James Keckler in 1824, who died from the effects of measles in the prime of life about 1830; both buried near Bremen, Fairfield Co., Ohio; no church but favored the River Brethren. Mr. Keckler was a man of rather more than ordinary strength and was a cooper by occupation.
Margaret (Beery) Keckler came with her parents (Nicholas No. 2) from Rockingham Co., Va., to the vicinity of Bremen, Ohio, during the years of 1803 to 1805, when she was a mere child. In those days Ohio was considered a far-distant wilderness, with no railroads to convey emigrants. The only mode of travel was by "mountain schooners. In Iowa fifty years later they were called "prairie schooners."
The above Margaret (Beery) Keckler, is by some of her relatives called "Rebecca," but in order to decide this question 1 will produce verbatim one of her tax receipts, during her widowhood: "Oct. 9, 1833. Received of Margaret Keckler one dollar and 50 cents and 6 mills in full as State, county, and poor tax _for the year 1833 for 160 acres of land, including house and appurtenances, horses, cattle. etc.—John C. Weaver, Treas., Fairfield county, Ohio."
The foregoing sketch is vouched for by the grandson Simon B. Keckler, Parker, Ind.
Children: John [July 11, 1826]; Mary; Catharine.
