     James was born circa 1658 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island. He was not yet of age in his father's will of 1674. James married Elizabeth Sprague, daughter of John Sprague and Elizabeth Holbrook, circa 1690. The family resided in the northwestern part of Rhode Island in Providence, In 1731, part of Providence became known as Glocester & Smithfield. James was the only one of his brothers to remain in Rhode Island. The exact order & birth of their children is not known. James's wife, Elizabeth, died in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, leaving him a widower. James married 2nd Mercy Taylor on 12 December 1742 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island. James's wife, Mercy, died before 24 March 1751 in Providence, Knox County, Kentucky, leaving him a widower. James married 3rd Elizabeth Knox on 24 March 1751 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island. James made his will on 7 March 1752 at Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island. He mentions his wife, Elizabeth. his son William wearing apparel and gun. Grandson Hezekiah Herenden 20 shillings. Daughter Abigail Blackmar's eldest two daughters 20 shillings each. Son-in-law William Sprague 15 shillings. Rest equally to daughter's children and to my daughter Mercy Sprague viz Mary's children: Hannah Phillips, Joseph Cook, Abigail Cutler, Samuel Cook. A third part to daughter Elizabeth's children: Elizabeth Tourtellot and Rebecca Williams. To daughter Mercy Sprague a third part. James departed this life on Wednesday, 4 April 1753 at Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island. His will was probated on 13 April 1753.
