     Charles was born in Scotland. In 1640, some of the Stewart family including Charles left the Episcopal Church. Charles converted to the ranks of the Presbyterians and because of this was forced to leave Bute in 1664 or 1665. He settled at Ballintoy, County Antrim, Ireland. He got there a year or so before Petric's group arrived in November of 1666.
