Carl married Amanda "Affa" Carr on 24 December 1903 in Upper Sandusky, Crane Township.1 Carl and Amanda had one daughter, Virgina Ruth [12/10/1912-5/23/2004][m. Carl Blackburn & 2nd Dean Alan Camper]. 15 April 1910, Carl and his wife, Amanda, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Upper Sandusky, Crane Township at 366 Hagel Street. Enumerated in this household were Carl P. Smith [28 Ohio] Affa [26 Virginia] & his father, Henry [67 Germany]. Carl was a carpenter for the railroad. The couple had been married 6 years with no children born to them.2 21 January 1920, Carl and his wife, Amanda, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Upper Sandusky, Crane Township at 430 Johnson Street. Enumerated in this household were Carl P. Smith [39 Ohio], Affa [36 Virginia] & Virginia [9 Ohio]. They owned their home free and clear. He was a carpenter for the railroad.3 11 April 1930, Carl and his wife, Amanda, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Upper Sandusky, Crane Township at 430 Johnson Street. Enumerated in this household were Carl P. Smith [49 Ohio], Affa [47 Virginia] & Virginia [19 Ohio]. They owned their home valued at $4500. Carl was an instructor for the Steam Railroad, and Virginia was working as a beautician.4 24 April 1940, Carl and his wife, Amanda, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Upper Sandusky, Crane Township at 430 Johnson Street. Enumerated in this household were Carl P. Smith [59 Ohio], Affa [57 Virginia] & grandson Carl Blackburn [7 Ohio]. Carl was working for a building contractor as a carpenter.5 Carl departed this life in 1958 in Upper Sandusky, Crane Township at his home, 430 Johnson Street at age 76 years. He was buried there at Upper Sandusky, Crane Township in Old Mission Cemetery.

The undersigned respectfully makes applicaton for a marriage licence for said parties, and upon oath states that the said Carl P. Smith is twenty-one years on the 10 day of Sept. 1903, his place of residence is Upper Sandusky, Ohio, his place of birth is Upper Sandusky, Ohio, his occupation is carpenter, his father's name is Henry Smith, his mother's maiden name was Pauline Meinzer, and he was not married, and he has no wife living.
    That said Affa Carr is 20 years of age on the 15 day of August 1903, her residence is Nevada, Wyandot County, Ohio, her place of birth is Nevada, Ohio, her occupation is house keeping, her father's name is Rollen Carr, her mother's maiden name was Ida Allen, that she was not previously married, and is not a widow or a divorced woman; that she has no husband living. Said parties are not nearer of kin than second cousins and there are no legal impediments to their marriage. It is expected that Rev. Langendorf is to solemnize the marriage of the said parties.
