Jean was born in Tourouvre, Orne, Normandy, France. He was christened there on 20 November 1633 in St-Aubin Church.1 Jean left France after signing a contract for work in New France in 1662. His leaving France was precipitated by the famine and religious wars of the time. On 1 May 1664, Jean and his brother, Robert, were confirmed at Cap-de-la-Madeleine by a visiting priest; this is the one known record of Jean in New France, for in 1665, Jean returned to France, quite possibly to help his parents. At his father's death in 1671, he inherited his father's property known as "la Chauveliere". Jean married Louise Vaudron on 7 May 1674 at St-Aubin Church, Tourouvre, Orne, Normandy, France.2 Jean & Louise remained on the family property for the remainder of their lives.

Jean departed this life before 1694 in Tourouvre, Orne, Normandy, France.
