Walter Palmer1

M, b. circa 1585, d. 10 November 1661
     Walter was born circa 1585 in Nottinghamshire, England. Walter married Ann Elizabeth (?) circa 1607 in England. He immigrated to New England in 1628. He was made freeman in Charlestown 18 May 1631. He removed to Rehoboth in 1643 & Stonington in 1653.2 Walter's wife, Ann, died before 1 June 1633, leaving him a widower. Walter married 2nd Rebecca Short on 1 June 1633 in Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.2 Walter made his will on 19 May 1658 at Stonington, New London County, Connecticut.

Unto my sonne Jonah yoake of three years old stearses, and a horse; to my daughter Grace 20s; to all my grandchildren 20s a piece. To my sonne Jonah, halfe ye planting Lott at ye new medow River, by Seaconck & Lotte betweene John Butterworths, according to ye fouer score pound Estate, & the use of halfe ye housing & halfe ye whole farme for four yeares. To my sonne William the other halfe of saide farme at Seaconcke forever, and to take Robert Martine or some other skillfull man and to divide the housing and the whole farme into two equall pts and to take his owne and dispose of it as he pleaseth. I give him also a Mare with her Foale, two red oxen, a paire of steares of three years old a piece, fower Cowes and a Muskett, with all such things as are his owne already, The other halfe of the farme at Seaconcke I give to my sonne Gersom forever after the ende terms of fower years. ALL the rest of my land, goods, chattel undisposed I leave unto my wife, whome with my sonne Elihu, I make full executor, to pay my debts, bring up my children and pay them their portions as my lands and estate will bear; but in case my wife marry againe, before my children are brought up and their portions paid, then my three sonnes Elihu, Nehemia, and Moses to enter upon the farme and estate and to pay unto their mother 10 pounds per annum dureing her life and ye land and estate duely valued to be equally distributed among my children, Elihu, Nehemia, Moses, Benjamin, Gershom, Hannah and Rebecca with consideration of the tenn pound yearely to be payd to their mother out of my land. But if my wife pay their portions according to her discretion and my three sonnes. Elihu, Nehemia and Moses possess the land, they shall give 20 pounds a piece out of the land to my sonne Benjamin, besides his mother’s portion in three years after they possessed of the Farme.

Memorandum: If Elihu, Nehemia and Moses decease before they have any yeare, Benjamin is to succeed in their pl. of the farme, and give to my dau., Elizabeth, two Cowes. I give my Executor a yeare’s time for payment of these Legacies.
Testified to by the three witnesses, on oath before George Denison, Com. Approved by the Court on Petition of Lieut. Richard Cooke in behalf of my Widow Palmer, relict of Walter, and Elihu, their sonne on the oarthes of us, Samuell and Nathan Chesebrough, 11 May, 1662.2

Walter departed this life on Thursday, 10 November 1661 in Stonington. He was buried there in Wequetequock Burying Ground.2 The inventory of Walter's estate was taken on Friday, 31 March 1662. It was valued at £ 1644 & 5 shillings. His will was probated on 11 May 1662.
