Hartman, 74, of Council Street, an outside plant engineer for New York Telephone Co. for 37 years, died Wednesday (Sept. 22, 1999) in his home while under the care of Hospice. A native and lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, he was a graduate of LaSalle High School.
Hartman served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He retired from the New York Telephone Co. in 1985. Hartman was a member of Bacon Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Niagara Falls Lions Club and the LaSalle Lions Club, of which he was also a past president. In addition, he was zone chairman and deputy district governor of District 20N of Lions International. He was also an active member and past president of the Retired Men's Service Club Chorus, and was a past member and president of the Niagara Falls Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America.
Hartman was also a member of Wheatfield American Legion Post 1451 and past president and member of the Oppenheim Zoological Society. In addition, he was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
He held a long interest in hunting, fishing, boating, and riding snowmobiles and motorcycles. Hartman enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the outdoors with relatives and friends.His other passions included carpentry and woodworking. He built three homes, as well as furniture, decorative items and playhouses for his granddaughters. In addition, Hartman built suspended "lookout" forts for his grandsons. Hartman had played with numerous fast-pitch softball teams, as well as with many hockey teams. He donated his body to the University at Buffalo Medical School. His eyes were donated to the Buffalo Eye Bank & Research Society.
Survivors include his wife, the former Pauline "Polly" Meraw; two daughters, Susan L. Ciesielski and Nancy E. Rosie, both of North Tonawanda; two brothers, Elroy "Mort" of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Paul; two sisters, Lorraine Lipp of Kenmore and Marylou Jones; an[d four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in Bacon Memorial Presbyterian Church, 166 59th St.
He was buried at Lewiston in Gate of Heaven Cemtery.1
