William Henrichsen Neff

     William was born on Friday, 22 September 1905 at Holladay, Salt Lake County, Utah. He was the son of William Cyrus Neff and Caroline Henrichsen. He often went by the name of "Bill". William married Elizabeth Leggett, daughter of Augustus Wright Leggett and Emma Kay "Jimmy" Carter, on 27 June 1930 in Salt Lake City.1 7 October 1940, William and his wife, Elizabeth, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Salt Lake City on Holladay Boulevard. Enumerated in this household were Wm. H. Neff [34 Utah], his wife: Elizabeth [34 Utah] & Carolyn [6 Utah]. Highest grade completed: William has 3 years of college & Elizabeth has 3 years of High School. In the prior week, he had worked 60 hours as a landscaper & Elizabeth 40 hours as a bookeeper. Their income was $4,126.00.2 William departed this life on Saturday, 24 March 2001 in Salt Lake City at age 95 years, 6 months and 2 days.

He was born September 22, 1905. His career as golf course landscape architect and nurseryman spanned 70 years. Bill leaves a legacy of great beauty. As a result of his artistic talents, many parks, residences and golf courses provide vistas to be enjoyed and marveled at by all, now and for generations to come. He often spoke with pride about his landscape of the LDS Temple grounds in Los Angeles.
Bill was a member of the LDS Church. He was involved in many organizations as well. The American Association of Golf Course Architects honored him by recording a videotape, which is in their archives and enumerates his accomplishments as a golf course architect. Bill was the first president of the Holladay Lion's Club, a member of the Sugar House Rotary Club, served as a member and president of the Utah-Idaho Nurserymen's Association. He was a long-time member on the board of the Red Butte Garden and Arboretum.
Bill was an avid golfer and a member of Salt Lake Country Club, where he supervised golf course revisions in 1952 and 1964, and served as a consultant for many years as well. He also was member of Oakridge, Alpine and Bloomington Country Clubs, all of which he designed and planted. He used his engineering talents to invent a lawn-planting machine, which he utilized to seed many of his projects.
Survivors include daughters: Carolyn Dunn and Diana (Weston) Gouge; grandchildren: William Neff Green, Cindy (Joel) Klein and Julie Ann (Brad) Slack; great-grandchildren: Jonathen Green and Madison Slack and nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Leggett; sisters: Lucile, Evelyn, Isabelle, Ernestine; brother, Barr and his parents.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 31, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 South Highland Drive, where friends and family may call Friday 6-8 p.m. and Saturday 10:15-11:15 a.m., prior to services. He was buried in Millcreek, Salt Lake County, Utah, in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.3
